Its so nice to be able to answer the inevitable Monday morning question of “how was your weekend?’ with GREAT!
I have a ton of little projects to do around the house. But summer is too short to work all week long then spend your weekend doing chores.
To start with, we sold our Talladega NASCAR tickets. We won’t be making that fall trip this year, which is a bummer, but we’ll get our tickets for next year and try again. We will try to find someplace a little closer to home rather than a 20 hour car trip this year.
My husband has our ‘68 GTO running again, after being in the garage all of last season. Its so good to be back in the car again and its running better than ever. So, Friday night we cruised to the Delta Diner for Friday night fish fry. Delicious – and I am not all that crazy about fish so you know its good if I like it. If you’ve never been to the Delta Diner you are missing a real treat. Nestled in the middle of nowhere, this 1940’s dining car draws a crowd of locals and tourists usually cruisin by in classic cars, motorcycles, and even the occasional RV. The food is always excellent, the staff is great, and the place is SPOTLESS. You can eat off the floors without worry of the three second rule here. You do have to time things just right – we were lucky to not have to wait for a table. I have seen 2 hour waits with people lined up out the door – the food is that good.
Saturday I did break down and get a few chores done. Then my husband and I hit the CAMBA trails on our mountain bikes. Our first time out of the trails so far this year and the first time ever on the Wilderness Lake Trail. Planning a roughly 10 mile round trip, we missed a cut-off and ended up doing close to 15 miles. OOPS! Luckily my husband snowmobiles in the area and found some familiar turf, otherwise we’d probably still be riding around in the woods.
We are prepping to ride in the Seeley Lions Pre-fat and the Fat Tire ‘Short and Fat’ so its good for us to get out on the trails. CAMBA has miles and miles of trails – after all this is the mountain bike capital of the Midwest. So beautiful to pass fields of wildflowers, streams and acres of pines. We didn’t see a bear, believe it or not!
One complaint – the CAMBA trails bump up against ATV trails. Is it too much to ask that motorized vehicles stay off the bike trails? Its not like there aren’t enough trails for ATV’s and what is the fascination with that anyway? I do not see how sitting in noise, dust and exhaust with safety goggles on is a good way to enjoy being in nature. Playing the law of averages, the DNR can’t be everywhere, so the obnoxious get away with being obnoxious and the rest of us have to deal. Off my soap box for now!
Sunday, we had a leisurely morning, sitting outside sipping coffee. My daughter, who is 12, has landed herself a job helping with set up at some local art fairs and such. A friend of ours was recently injured and needs assistance setting up her booth. We shall see if she’s ready for the world of work.
We took another cruise in the GTO – this time up the South Shore of Lake Superior. What a beautiful day. The kind of day that reminds us of why we moved up here to begin with. Perfect blue sky with the start of fog drifting in off the lake. A nice breeze kept it cool - its always cooler by the lake – but not cold. Stopped at the beach in Port Wing, watched the boats and played in the surf. Found some very unusual rocks and generally hung out. No crowds. Peace and quiet.
I also finished a good book – The Dirty Secrets Club by Meg Gardiner. Excellent find at the ‘just returned’ table at the library. Mystery/thriller of a forensic psychiatrist performing psychological autopsies (who really does this anyway?) on a string of murder-suicides in San Francisco. Fast paced. Throw in earthquakes and Halloween for an extra twist.
I love when we can get out and enjoy our own backyard, so to speak. Relax and enjoy without the hassle of “getting there”. That’s why we moved to the north woods. A great weekend with all the comforts of home. Oh, and I did 7 loads of laundry, too!
