My Message to John McCain

John McCain wants my vote.

I am a 40-something, undecided,  democratic leaning,  working mom in the ‘rust belt’ who supported Hillary in the primaries

My message to John McCain:

C’mon, give me something I can use!

Don’t get me wrong.  John McCain is an American hero who has spent a lifetime serving his country.  He has been the voice of reason in the Senate.  Common sense enough to reach across the aisle to meet in the middle where most American’s are.  I would have proudly voted for him in 2000 had I been given the opportunity.  Now, eight years later, I am struggling to come up with a single reason convincing enough to give him my vote.

Iraq

The billions of dollars and the sacrifice of so many American soldiers and their families and McCain says 100 more years?  That doesn’t work for me.

  Economy

Cleaning up Washington and Wall Street is a little like locking the barn door after the horse has been stolen.  Yes, lock the door, but its going to take more.  The heart of the economy (American worker) may be strong, but most of us are scared to death.

Energy

Drill, Baby, Drill! is NOT a comprehensive energy policy.  Yes, do something about the $4 gas today.  But what is your plan so that we never are at foreign oil’s mercy again?

Maverick

Really…?  Maverick…?  Mover and shaker in your own party…?  Where the Hell have you been the past eight years?  For future reference, please remove lips from GWB’s arse before calling yourself a maverick.

Sarah Palin     Its hard to even know where to start -

First, don’t you dare assume that you can put any woman on the ticket and I’ll come running with my vote.

Choosing an under-qualified woman as your running mate doesn’t advance women or women’s causes.  In fact, it hurts women who are out there everyday fighting the stereotype of ’not quite good enough’.

Second, please convince me that Sarah Palin is not a book-banning Nazi.  A little transparency on her governing style, please.

What books did Palin attempt to ban from the Wasilla library? If she wasn’t planning to ban books, why did she try to fire the librarian?

Trooper-gate:  I would respect Palin a heck of a lot more if she’d be straight up – the trooper was harassing her family and as Governor, she and her family didn’t have to put up with that crap.

So, she fired the top Alaskan law enforcement official for not seeing and responding to things her way.  I really don’t have a big problem with this.  This issue gets bigger the more your campaign stone-walls.  Address it and move on already.

Third, convince me that Palin can represent the American people as a whole, not just member’s of  the far-right minority

It scares me that someone famous for reaching across the aisle like McCain has buckled to the extreme right to secure his candidacy.  Reassure me that  Sarah Palin can think on her own.  Let her speak instead of repeating verbatim what you have told her.  I have no problem with Palin’s Christian views (even though they don’t exactly line up with mine.)  My question – how will Palin respond to the moderate viewpoints of the majority of Americans when they don’t align with those of the far-right?

The Press

Don’t rage against the liberal media, sequester your vice-presidential pick, make ‘lipstick on a pig’ a campaign issue, then complain when you are not treated as you wish to be in the press.

Do you think the press will go easier on you if elected president?  I hope not.  You will need an effective communication strategy in the White House. You might want to work on that now.

After reading this post you may think I am an Obama supporter.  I am not.  I truly am undecided.  Obama has not earned my vote either.  Its just that I have come to expect so much more from John McCain than what he has shown in this campaign.  I am hoping he won’t continue to disappoint me.
